Exam 3 study guide
- This exam will be covering Sections 3.1-3.4, 4.1-4.3, and
5.1-5.4.
- The important topics in Chapters 3,4,5 are listed on pages
315, 371 and 433 except that we skipped modeling and conics.
- You should be able to sketch basic polynomial, rational,
exponential and logarithmic functions. This includes features
like domain, range, x-intercepts, y-intercepts and asymptotes.
- You should still remember how to shift, reflect and stretch
functions. (Section 2.4)
- You must also know how to solve general polynomial equations
by factoring (rational zeros test, long and synthetic division)
or using the quadratic formula.
- You have to be able to find a partial fraction decomposition
of a rational function.
- You have to know the rules and properties of exponents
and logarithms and you need to be able to use them to solve
logarithmic and exponential equations.
- Make sure you know how to deal with fractions, roots, absolute
values. You should still remember the techniques we studied
in Chapters 1,2 (like solving equations). Although this will not be
specifically tested it could come up. Math is cumulative in nature:
learn it today, use it tomorrow.
- You should be familiar with all the terminology we are using,
like increasing, odd function, composition, expanding, condensing,...
- I suggest doing as many problems from the reviews to chapters
3,4,5 as you can (at least one of them from each chapter review
will be on the exam).
- Put a special emphasis on sections you know you had difficulties
with. You can skip the word problems.
- On page 316-319 focus on 1-4, 7-18, 24-29, 34-43, 48-65, 67-86, 100.
- On page 372-373 focus on 1-8, 13-28, 32-43.
- On page 434-437 focus on 1-10, 19-22, 35-56, 58-74, 76-91, 96-107,
130-136.
- Do the cumulative test on page 440 (only if you have the time and
want to check how you are doing.)
- If you have the time for it, then doing extra problems
from the book is the way to go in any Math class.
The more you work with the concepts, the "readier" you are going to be.
- Some problems on the exam may throw you off at first.
Make sure that you get a good nights sleep, so that you are fresh,
rested and ready to go!
