Course Announcements:
- 5/4: If you can't attend office hours, please post all your questions on the discussion board - and send me a reminder by email if I don't respond quick enough :).
- 5/4: My office hours during finals week will be Monday 5/8, 12:30-2:30.
- 5/4: The final is on Tuesday 5/9, 1:45-3:45.
- 5/4: Your total homework score is now available on WebCT. Remember that only the 10 best assignments were counted, so that your total can be at most 150. (Actually one student has the amazing score of 149.5)
- 5/1: Bring your student ID to the final.
- 5/1: Study guide for final exam.
- 5/1: 29 out of 36 students registered for the class took the survey, but one of the surveys was blank.
A majority of students wants to be able to use MATLAB on the final (22 yes, 4 no, 2 abstentions) as well as a cheat sheet (19 yes, 5 no, 4 abstentions), so that's what we will do.
- 4/11: If you do better on the final than on your lowest in-class exam,
then that exam grade will be replaced by the final.
- 4/2: I don't know how readable the files were that I posted on Wednesday, so I scanned them again and reposted them.
- 3/29: The Study guide for exam 2 is now up.
- 3/29: I am currently out of town and it has been difficult to get access to a scanner to post the solutions for the last assignment, as well as the notes for lectures 19 and 20, but hopefully all of this will be taken care of today.
- 3/21: There will be a talk directed at a general audience about "a mathematician working in the real world on CS-type problems" in the Math Colloquium on April 4,
titled "The mathematics behind the Arc Internet Map Server".
- 3/6: Your midterm grade has been posted on webCT. This grade is heavily based on your performance on exam 1 and does not show + or - grades. If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
- 3/6: The last day to withdraw from courses due to insufficient course prepation is Wednesday 3/8. After that point withdrawals will only be granted for more serious documented reasons.
- 2/21: A pdf file with the characterization of invertible matrices can now be found as item 0 under lectures on WebCT. This will be updated whenever we find a new characterization.
- 2/18: The Study guide for exam 1 summarizes mostly what I announced on Thursday about exam 1, as well as some practice questions.
- 2/18: The schedule above has been updated to more accurately state what we covered before the first exam.
- 2/9: MATLAB is now available in the bookstore for $99.95 for interested students.
- 2/6, the grader says: To make grading easier, please label problems by their numbers from the book and not 1,2,3 ...
- 2/2: The updated lecture 6, and the new homework assignment have now been posted.
- 2/2: The MATLAB link now contains a few new commands.
- 2/2: The bookstore just told me that they have ordered 10 copies of the student version of MATLAB. They should arrive middle of next week and cost 99.95.
- 1/31: Some students have asked about a student version of MATLAB;
I heard that there are student versions, and I am inquiring with IITS about this.
- 1/31: If you have a problem with starting MATLAB from your account, then there might be a problem with your "profile". The helpdesk should be able to fix this problem for you. Just email them and they will tell you what to do.
- 1/26: Lecture 4 -- all these will be removed after the weekend, so make sure that you know your way around WebCT by then at the latest.
- 1/24: Lecture 3 will be removed some time soon, so make sure to turn in your registration form! This will be the last lecture to be posted here unless I hear back from somebody who still requires them to be here.
- 1/22: The pdf file for assignment 1 is now available on the homework link above!
- 1/22: I have come to realize that in general I will not be able to provide the homework problems typed up in pdfformat on the webpage, even though I had hoped to be able to do so (see 1/13 below).
This should not be a hardship for many of you: all problems will be picked from the book, except for maybe an occasional supplement that will be posted.
If this is a hardship for you, then send me an email and we will see what we can do. Remember: the 9th edition of the textbook is REQUIRED course material.
- 1/19: Lecture 2 has now been updated on WebCT to include also matrix multiplication as covered in the lecture.
- 1/19: Assignment 1 consists of questions 1.1#1bdf,4b,5a,6a,7; 1.2#2,3,5ac,6a,10,19; 1.3#3abce,5abd,11,15a,19; 1.4#2,24,25. (The homework page will be updated tomorrow)
- 1/19: I am making some changes to the Homework Page -- the page will be operational again tonight. At that time it will also contain the first homework assignment.
- 1/19: Since some of the crashers do not have WebCT access yet, here are
Lecture 1 and Lecture 2.
These will be removed some time soon, so make sure to turn in your registration form!
- 1/19: Any questions regarding MATLAB that are not answered in class should be asked in the MATLAB discussion group.
- 1/19: You may use MATLAB to check your answers to homework questions and for practice. Thus in general homework solutions must be detailed, showing appropriate intermediate steps and not just the final answer. If you are unsure about something, then ask!
- 1/19: Notice that there is a new link above that leads to a MATLAB fact sheet. This fact sheet will be updated as we progress in the course.
- 1/19: An additional office hour has been set for Thursday 2:30-3:30. During this time students from my graduate course will be given preference. So don't count on my being available to you, but try to ask all your questions on Tuesday! However, if no graduate student is with me I will be happy to help you.
- 1/17: I can accomodate all crashers that put their name on the sign-up sheet today. Bring me a course add/drop sheet (at your earliest convenience) with all information filled in (CRN: 21629), and I will sign you in.
- 1/17: Welcome to Math 374!
- 1/13: Some students may have the 8th edition of the textbook already. My feeling is that is probably not very different from the 9th edition we will be using - I can't say for sure though since I never worked with it, and don't have a copy. Whenever I refer to pages/theorems from the book I will use the numbers from the 9th edition, so working with the 8th edition is "at your own risk" since I don't know annoying/difficult it will be to follow me. Homework will be on the web in pdf format, so that part is not a problem.
- 1/12: The class has been moved from room 308 to room 302 to accomodate all students.
- 1/10: There are a bunch of Linear Algebra books in QA184 for
those of you who want an angle different from our textbook and/or
other examples. Terminology in Linear Algebra
is quite standardized, but still be careful when reading other
sources!
- 1/10: This course will have a discussion board for homework
questions on WebCT. Please check in there occasionally.
- 1/10:
Universal grade change form.
- 1/10:
This is where all course announcements will be posted, except for
homework assignments (available on homework page) and
lectures, homework solutions and exam solutions (available on WebCT).
