| Please Note: It is important that each
student read and understand these policies at the beginning of the semester. So we do not
have any misunderstandings later. EACH STUDENT MUST PRINT OUT and SIGN a COPY of this form,
submitting it to me on a
date certain. I expect each student to attend class regularly. Each student will bring a Name Placard--easily obtained from the duplication center as a piece of white card stock cut in half and folded lengthwise--with his-her Surname (and pronunciation tips) beginning the first week of class. Each student is responsible for bringing it to each and every class, throughout the semester. This will help me to learn your names more quickly; it will similarly help your colleagues to learn who you are. I will give periodic quizzes that are intended to provide an incentive for doing your readings as assigned and for attending class. Though the quizzes only comprise a small portion of your grade collectively (see criteria), please understand that these quizzes often make the difference in your final grade between say an "A" and a "B," . . . or a "D" and an "F." Provided you are keeping current on your readings and taking part in class discussions, these quizzes are intended to help your overall course grade. Conversely, if you fail to keep current on your readings, you will likely find these quizzes a source of duress and a liability. Obviously, a student cannot take a quiz if (s)he is not in class. A missed quiz cannot be made up. Similarly, exams will be taken as scheduled (subject to my revision only). My policy is not to allow make up tests in any but the most extraordinary of situations. Under no circumstances may a student come to me after an exam and request to make it up. Academic Honesty. All exams and quizzes are closed book and closed notes. I assume academic honesty is something that each student takes seriously. The University Catalogue says: “Students will be expected to adhere to standards of academic honesty and integrity, as outlined in the Student Academic Honesty Policy. All written work and oral presentation assignments must be original work. All ideas/material that are borrowed from other sources must have appropriate references to the original sources. Any quoted material should give credit to the source and be punctuated with quotation marks. Students are responsible for honest completion of their work including examinations. There will be no tolerance for infractions. If you believe there has been an infraction by someone in the class, please bring it to the instructor’s attention. The instructor reserves the right to discipline any student for academic dishonesty, in accordance with the general rules and regulations of the university. Disciplinary action may include the lowering of grades and/or the assignment of a failing grade for an exam, assignment, or the class as a whole.” Incidents of Academic Dishonesty will be reported to the Dean of Students. Sanctions at the University level may include suspension or expulsion from the University.” Any breach of academic honesty will be dealt with as harshly as University permit. My policy is to fail the student and to alert the appropriate persons on campus of a breach of academic honesty. Please kindly remember to turn off all mobile (cell or otherwise) phones, paging devices, or other devices that might disrupt class. A general course policy is to treat your peers with the respect and kindness with which you wish to be treated. The course will progress according to the schedule; and we shall read and discuss the text per the outline. Please note that the readings assigned for each class are to be read prior to class. I require each student to read and electronically "sign" these policies. To sign electronically, each student must complete the online registration. Any student who fails to register ascent to these policies shall be dropped from my class roster. |
