Vietnam Photos

These photos are pictures I took during the summer of 1996 on my first visit to Vietnam.  During the trip I was able to visit a number of historical sites as well as war museums in both Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon).

This is the famous, or rather infamous, site where mostly US pilots (but others as well) were held as prisoners of war.  It was euphemistically called the Hanoi Hilton.  Notice the blue placard just under the doorway arch.   It says something about not taking pictures!  Of course my Vietnamese is so very poor, . . .

mig 21

This is MIG-21, flown by the North Vietnamese against American pilots.  This particular one is in Ha Noi at a very interesting war museum.   I think one of the most interersting things about this museum is that it is comprised primarily of artifacts from the first Indochina war--i.e., the war with the French.  I find something about monuments to French failure particularly inspiring.

This is the same museum where I photographed the MIG.   This is a Soviet-made T 54 tank (?).  Tanks like this one rolled into Saigon in April 1975, ending America's presence.
