Marriage: In Need of Help or Simply Going with the Flow?

After careful consideration of your readings and the lectures on marriage and cohabitation, post your opinion on the state of marriage in the U.S. Is the institution deteriorating or responding reasonably to socio-economic factors which alter its form and function? Or perhaps you have concluded that it is both falling apart and responding to socio-economic factors. Whatever your opinion, explain it to the class, using the questions below as loose guidelines.

If you are of the opinion that marriage is falling apart, how is this deterioration manifesting itself? Why is this breakdown occurring? What can be done about it? How do you deal with Cherlin’s and Skolnick’s conclusions? Are they valid?

If you are of the opinion that marriage is changing in ways that we can expect, given on-going shifts in society, how do you respond to those who claim it is deteriorating?
Do Cherlin’s and Skolnick’s conclusions about marriage raise any additional questions for you?
