Criteria for the evaluation of in-class participation

Below you will find the scale by which I will evaluate your class participation, which is 10 percent of your final grade.  It is up to you to decide what grade you would like to receive in participation. Of course, I hope that you will want to earn all 10 points. Please keep in mind the following:

§         Any student, no matter their skill level, is capable of receiving all 10 points, you just have to consistently make serious attempts at participating as specified below.

§         I can only evaluate what I observe. If you don’t participate because you are shy, I can’t give you points, because I will have nothing to evaluate. Please come talk to me if you have anxiety about speaking in class; I can give you tips to overcome this.

§         Don’t wait until the end of the semester to begin to participate. The grade is assessed based on your participation throughout the semester.

·         I came prepared to class everyday.

·         I always greeted and took leave of my professor and classmates using Spanish expressions.

·         I frequently volunteered to participate in class discussions when my professor asked for volunteers.

·         I always tried very hard to use Spanish in class, and I only used English after asking for permission, and after I attempted to express myself in Spanish.

·         My contributions to class discussions and group work were significant and had a positive impact on the class.

·         When I was having trouble with course material I always asked questions and actively sought help from my instructor or a tutor.

Good to Average

·         I generally came prepared to class.

·         I sometimes greeted and took leave of my professor and classmates using Spanish expressions.

·         Though I would volunteer to participate in class discussions, I only did so if no one else volunteered and my professor begged for volunteers.

·         I occasionally used English, especially in pair and group work or without attempting to express myself in Spanish first.

·         My contributions to class discussions and group work were average, sometimes significant, and sometimes insignificant, but more often than not they were significant and had a positive impact on the class.

·         When I was having trouble with course material I only occasionally would ask questions or seek help from my instructor or a tutor.

·         I showed progress throughout the semester.

Unsatisfactory

·         I frequently came to class unprepared.

·         I often came to class late or left early.

·         I rarely greeted and took leave of my professor and classmates using Spanish expressions.

·         The only times I would say anything in Spanish in class discussions was when the teacher forced me to, and even then I wouldn’t say much.

·         I frequently did not pay active attention during activities.

·         I would say very little in Spanish in my group activities, usually only when the teacher was around.

·         My contributions had little impact on the class.

·         When I was having trouble with course material I rarely to never asked questions or sought help from my instructor or a tutor.
