- Course Description:
This course seeks to introduce students to a range of works by Spanish and Latin American authors, and includes both canonical and non-canonical texts. Students will learn to read critically, analyze, and discuss the texts as literary works, as well as cultural manifestations. The course is conducted in English, and knowledge of Spanish is not a prerequisite for this course. However, bilingual editions of most texts will be provided for students wishing to read the works in the original language, and students may complete exams and other assignments in Spanish if they so choose.
Required Materials:
- Cervantes Saavedra, Miguel de. Selections from Don Quixote. Dover Publ. 1999.
- Flores, Angel (ed.). Great Spanish Plays in English Translation. Dover Publ. 1991.
- Katz Kaminsky, Amy (ed.) Water Lilies. U. of Minnesota Press 1996.
- Additional readings will be placed on reserve at the CSUSM Library.

Classroom Policies:
Participation: Regular and active participation is essential for the successful completion of this class, and in order to participate fully, you must be in class, on time. You are also expected to return from the mid-class break on time, and attendance will be taken for both halves of the class session. Your class participation grade will be based on both the quality and quantity of what you say. This includes your contribution in regular class sessions, and to small group activities. However, please keep in mind that you are expected to respect your classmates’ right to participate fully, and you will not receive extra points by trying to dominate every conversation. If you are in class but are not prepared or do not participate, you will not receive participation credit for the day. Each absence will result in zero participation credit for the day (regardless of the reason for your absence). Tardies of 20 minutes or more are also counted as absences.
Late work: All assignments must be turned in by the specified due dates – no late work will be accepted. If you can’t make it to class, send your assignment with a friend, or e-mail it to me by the due date. Missed oral presentations or other in-class projects cannot be made up (except in cases where students can present written documentation of illness or other serious, exceptional circumstances).
Please also see the attached sheet on “Classroom Etiquette”. Your adherence to these guidelines will help make the learning environment a positive one for you and your classmates. ¡Muchísimas gracias!
