Spanish 399 Course Contract Before you begin any work in the course you are required to read all of the information contained on the course web site (i.e. course description, assignments, rules...). Once you finish reading this information you must download and fill out the Course Contract and then return it via email as an attachment. You will receive 5 course points for this assignment, and you will not be able to participate in the course if you do not submit this contract. Late work is not accepted.

Service project description/ goal statement Before you begin your community service work, you must have your project approved by Prof. Pellettieri. To obtain approval you must take the following steps:

bullet

Identify a service site that is approved by the CSUSM Office of Community Service Learning (OCSL).

bullet

Speak with the person who would be your supervisor and find out all the details of the job you will be doing there. He or she must be willing to provide training, guide and supervise your activity, sign a weekly time-sheet, and provide a final report on your progress.

bullet

Download and fill out the Project Description Approval Form. Submit via email no later than 12noon September 18, 2003

bullet

Await Prof. Pellettieri's approval.

Dr. Pellettieri will review the forms and send you a reply to let you know if approval is granted or whether you need to find a new project.

Your grade for this assignment will be based on the quality of your description of your work and goals, as well as on the quality of your written language skills. Late work is not accepted.

Guidelines and limitations form Once Prof. Pellettieri had approved your service project, you must fill out the Supplemental job description form and the Guidelines and Limitations form.  These are official paperwork needed by the CSUSM Office of Community Service Learning (OCSL). You will submit these forms to Prof. Pellettieri's office in UH 215 no later than 12noon September 30, 2003. Prof. Pellettieri will turn them in to the OCSL. Late work is not accepted.

Project completion- Supervisor evaluation & time sheet A completed time sheet and an evaluation from your site supervisor must be submitted and date stamped by the secretary of the Dept. of World Languages (UH 217) no later than December 3, 2003 by 12 noon. Time sheets will be found in the Guide to Community Service Learning booklet, available from the OCSL. You may download your Supervisor Evaluation form, but a signed copy must be submitted Prof. Pellettieri no later than December 3, 2003 by 12 noon. If your supervisor is going to mail the form, the address is Prof. Jill Pellettieri; Dept. of World Languages & Hispanic Literatures; California State Univeristy, San Marcos; San Marcos, CA 92096. The evaluation must arrive by the deadline, so please give the form to your supervisor with ample lead time.

Your grade for this assignment will be based on how well your met the 40 hour/90% Spanish job description and your professionalism as described by your supervisor. Late work is not accepted.

Reports (4 total) You will write four short reports during your service commitment. Three will be reflective reports and one will be a final project preview. You will send each of these documents to me as an attachment via email.

bullet

Reflective reports:  A one-page (double-spaced, 12pt. font)  reflective narrative in which you comment on the work your are doing and what you are learning. You must describe in detail one particular experience that you had during the hours you have worked (since a previous report) that made a special impact on you. Describe the moment and why it impressed you. Also comment on how the work experience is or is not meeting your original expectations. Reflective reports are due via email as attachments no later than 12:00 noon on October 13; November 10; and November 24, 2003.

bullet

Final project preview: A one-page (possibly with attachments) description of what your final project will be and a report of its current status (i.e.  any challenges and successes you are having in carrying it out). If you have a document to demonstrate your final project, you may attach it to the report. This Project Preview is due via email as attachments no later than 12:00 noon on October 27, 2003.

Your grade for this assignment will be based on the quality of your description as well as on the quality of your written language skills. Late work is not accepted.

Final project This project will have two components: A videotaped oral report and hard copy documentation of your report. To complete this project you will produce a videotaped oral report in which you describe and demonstrate a 'product' of your service work. The nature of the 'product' will vary with the service assignment. For example, students working in a school setting as a tutor or class helper might demonstrate and describe a lesson or activity that they produced; students working in a health clinic might demonstrate and describe documents that they translated into Spanish. The 'product' may even be a videotaping of the service you performed. For example, if a student works as an outreach counselor for a public program, the 'product' might be a videotape of him/her disseminating information at an information fair. You will submit the videotape to Prof. Pellettieri, along with any documentation of your 'product' (i.e. a lesson plan, a translated document...), and a bibliography.

The content of your videotaped oral presentation will include:

bullet

A brief description of the concept of Community Service Learning and what it means. You will need to consult at least three academic sources (journals or books) to learn what the concept entails and the various ways it is described. Remember to document your sources for your bibliography!

bullet

A brief description of your service work (where it took place, what you did, etc.).

bullet

A detailed description and demonstration of one of the products of this work (see above) and a description of how this product exemplifies the concept of service learning you describe in the beginning of your report.

bullet

A brief discussion of how this project did or did not meet your goals and expectations.

The documentation you attach will include:

bullet

A copy of any tangible product you demonstrate in your oral presentation.

bullet

A bibliography of your sources.

bullet

The signed permission form from your supervisor allowing you to videotape at the work site (only necessary if the video includes footage from worksite).

One of the objectives of this presentation is for you to demonstrate what you have learned about community service learning in Spanish. Another is for you to demonstrate your oral skills in Spanish. Therefore, in addition to the content specifications above, you must follow these guidelines:

bullet

The video will be a minimum of 5 minutes long and a maximum of 15 minutes long.

bullet

You must speak directly to the camera (i.e. I must see your face while speaking) for at least 5 minutes. You may narrate over other portions if you wish, but not a requirement.

bullet

You may use notes, but you may NOT read your presentation. An oral presentation that is read is boring and will put your professor to sleep, and will result in a low grade. Speak naturally and in an engaging and animated fashion to capture your professor's attention.

Prof. Pellettieri enjoys being able to see where students carry out their assignments and even see students actively engaged in their project. Therefore she encourages students to include some of this in their video presentations. However, it might be inappropriate or even illegal for students to videotape in their worksite. If you are interested in videotaping at your worksite, please verify with your supervisor that this is possible adn have him/her complete and sign the Videotape Permission form before you begin.

Video recorders may be borrowed from the Media Center at CSUSM. Plan well in advance to obtain a camera to be sure one will be available when you need it. Use only quality videotapes and record on the highest quality setting (the shortest play time). More technologically adept students may wish to submit their presentation via DVD. While this is preferred, this is NOT at all a requirement.

You grade for this assignment will rest on the following:

bullet

Content: how well you have addressed the assignments requirements

bullet

Oral Skills: how clearly you speak, how appropriate your vocabulary is, how understandable you are, etc. NOTE: non-native speakers at this level are still expected to make mistakes, especially in unplanned oral speech. Therefore I do not expect that everyone's speech will be error free, and I do not  deduct points for every error. I do not want you to memorize a speech, but I do expect that you would plan what you will say on the video so that you can produce a polished product free in which you are able to successfully communicate your ideas with a relative degree of accuracy.

This assignment  is due in my office (UH 215)  no later than 12:00 noon on December 8, 2003. Late work is not accepted.
