Spanish 399 is a community service learning course designed to help you improve your cultural and linguistic competence in Spanish, learn about serving others, and explore the ways in which the Spanish language is fundamental to aspects of life here in San Diego County.
This course has two basic components: the community service project and the reporting of your work through course assignments. You will be graded on each component as described below. Because of the service learning component of the course, we must work in conjunction with the Office of Community Service Learning on campus here at CSUSM. It is this office which provides information on available work sites, as well as takes care of the administrative paperwork necessary to run off-campus service projects.

Description of community service assignments Community service learning is more than just "volunteer work", it is the opportunity to learn an academic discipline outside of the classroom and in the context of lending a necessary service to the community. In the case of Spanish 399, your community service project will help you to improve your Spanish and learn about Hispanic/Latino cultures as well as learn about working in the community. The following are the requirements of your service assignment:
| A minimum of 40 hours of non-paid community service, at least 90% of which must be carried out in Spanish. It is not enough that Spanish is spoken at the work site, you must be actively involved in producing, comprehending and interacting in Spanish. | |
| Each student will select and secure his/her own work assignment following the guidelines specified by the CSUSM Office of Community Service Learning. | |
| For information on how to obtain a service project, click here. | |
| Each work assignment must be approved by your instructor BEFORE you begin working. See the assignments section for information on how to submit your project description for approval. Project description approval forms must be submitted no later than September 18, 2003. |
