In 2002, the collaborative art group, Desperate Optimists, created a video project for the web called Minute by Minute which was an exploration of urban space. The site contains 24 one minute digital videos for the web about Newham in East London, a dying industrial town undergoing a resurgence. Digital Optimists found eight artists who could create these films. The artists were given what may seem strict guidelines. The guidelines in fact provided freedom within structure. The partners of Digital Optimists say, "We're great believers in the jazz structure model, by which we mean it must be tight so you feel clear and supported enough to play freely because you aren't spending all of your time looking for the structure." (The Independent Film and Video Monthly, Sept 2002. www.aivf.org)

Using these basic instructions for shooting, produce two videos which create a sense of place for a web viewer:
1. Choose only one location to explore
2. Make one or two videos one minute in length or less
3. The video(s) must take place at two different times of day, at least five hours apart or on different days
4. No camera moves (panning, titling, zooming); however things can move in and out of the frame
5. Use sound that does not need strict audio/video synchronization
6. Video must reflect some incidental moments of activity

Using the image map below, link your videos to the map by downloading the page, opening it in Dreamweaver, and making links using the image map in the property inspector (or write you own html!). This image map already has mapped links, but you can create your own. Do not overwrite anyone elses. You video should appear in the a RealPlayer stand alone pop up window.

In this assignment, you will be making RealPlayer movies. Remember, you will be linking to the .ram file on the http server (courses) in your folder, which in turn calls up the video (on emmy) in a RealPlayer stand alone player.
