In April 1992 a young
man from a well-to-do family hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into
the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. He had given $25,000 in savings
to a charity, abandoned his car and most of his possessions, and burned
all of the cash in his wallet.
Four months later his remains were found in a blue sleeping bag in an
isolated bus far out into the wilderness. Amongst his remains were five
rolls of exposed film, an SOS note, and a diary recording the man's final
weeks in 113 entries written across the field guide to edible plants.
Among his possesions was found the book, Doctor Zhivago. In the margins
he wrote, "NATURE/PURITY" and "HAPPINESS ONLY REAL WHEN
SHARED". He circled passages such as "refuge in nature"
and "sometimes one wishes to escape the meaningless dullness of human
eloquence."
One of his last acts was to take a picture of himself standing near the
bus under the Alaska sky, one hand holding his final note towards the
camera lens, and the other raised in farewell.
The autopsy revealed
no broken bones or massive internal injuries. The probable cause of death
was starvation.

April 27th, 1992
Greetings from Fairbanks! This is the last you shall hear from me Wayne.
Arrived here 2 days ago. It was very difficult to catch rides in the Yukon
Territory. But I finally got there. Please
return all mail I receive to the sender. It might be a very long time
before I return South. If this adventure proves fatal and you don't ever
hear from me again I want you to know you're a great man. I now walk into
the wild.
Alex
