This is a sculpture by Marcel Duchamp, master of Dada
ceremonies. By lifting everyday objects from their original contexts, Duchamp
attempted to give the objects a new meaning in combination with other appropriated
objects. Through these nonsensical combinations, or recombinations, unexpected
and sometimes irrational meanings develope or explode. Hence, the title
"Bicycle Wheel" is an ironic title, as the object has now lost it's original
function as a bicycle wheel, and appeals in it's new configuration to our
poetic imagination.
