The TULIP Program
IITS's Technology Utilization in Learning and Information
Platforms (TULIP) program is designed to offer all faculty members
the opportunity to adopt new ways to support active learning,
greater student engagement and improved learning outcomes through
the use of integrated technology. Faculty can choose to develop a
media or GIS component to incorporate into one or more of their
courses. Not sure how to get started? This year we are offered two pre-proposal clinics to help
generate project ideas. If you missed them and would like to discuss
ideas, contact us.
TULIP Participation
Faculty members with selected proposals will work with IITS staff to complete their project this summer and will be invited to share their project and experiences with other faculty in a fall IDS open house.
If selected, you'll participate in two workshops focused on refining your ideas, project planning and learning the required technology. We'll provide lunch, needed equipment and a $500 stipend. Post workshop, you'll receive individualized support from IITS while completing, implementing and evaluating your project's impact.

Selection Criteria
Selection of the initial projects will be made by IITS in consultation with the Faculty Center.
- Projects that are reusable or have a lasting impact across courses will be given first consideration.
- An attempt will be made to find participating faculty from a variety of disciplines.
- Preference will be given to those proposals which:
- Are of a scope appropriate to the time allotted
- Have well thought out goals and learning outcomes
- Can be effectively incorporated into Cougar Courses as part of a learning module
- Incorporate a proposed evaluation of the project's impact on student learning outcomes
Media Projects
Easily turn presentations into reusable, sharable videos using Camtasia Relay or take advantage of our professional studio and post-production tools. Inspire and motivate your students by incorporating student produced documentaries, news reports, debates, interviews, etc.
Ideas
- Lecture capture
- Field video production
- Student field work involving real-time access to data sets or information
- Student project assignments incorporating media production
Geographical Information System (GIS) Projects
GIS is no longer just for geography departments. By putting information in the context of geography, GIS and geospatial thinking can be applied across many fields of study and are a desired skill set in an increasing number of professions. New GIS programs are easier to use and geographic data are becoming easier to find and access.
Ideas
- Dynamic, web-based maps used to embellish lectures
- Maps and map data that students use to complete assignments
- Assignments where students create their own maps
Requirements
Selected faculty will attend two workshops:
Introductory workshop (2 hrs)
Covering examples of effective media and GIS, as well as topics such as:
- Project planning - best practices
- Maximizing the impact of your project
- Equipment and tools -- good heavens, what is all this stuff?
- Accessibility -- what are the requirements?
Hands-on technology training workshops - Media or GIS (2 hrs)
- Topics will be specific to the track, either Media or GIS, but will include the hands-on training you’ll need in your selected technology.
Post workshop, you'll meet individually with IITS staff to refine your ideas, receive training and project support as necessary. Once complete, IITS will close caption your media materials for accessibility.
