Mail Tool mailbox icon

Why

The mail tool allows you to easily send a message to everyone enrolled in your course. When students log in to WebCT, they are alerted that they have a message from you. You may also attach files to your messages.

As an instructor it can be convenient to have mail from your students in one location instead of scattered throughout your regular email inbox. When you are teaching more than one section of the same course, a few emails from students in the same section will alert you that there is some concept that you need to clarify or some additional information you need to give to students in that section. With one email message to all students, you can resolve the issue.

Your WebCT course mail can be accessed any time you can get online so it is easy to remain in contact with your students even if you are at a conference or out of town.

Students know that you have received their messages because they can check their Outbox.

For the mail tool to work effectively, you need to make it clear to your students the first week of class that you want them to contact you through WebCT and not to use your campus email. If you assure them that you frequently check WebCT mail, most will use it. Also, give them a reason to check their mail. Early in the semester, send some interesting or important information via course mail. During class, refer to this information and students who have not been checking WebCT mail will get the message.
